Catalina Buzz — August

on July 30, 2018

With summer in full swing there’s no lack of things to do on Catalina. Here’s just a few of the things that have Catalina buzzing.

Go Hawaiian: There’s always something going on at the Catalina Island Museum and this month is no exception. For August, the museum is going Hawaiian during their First Fridays evening program, with a pig roast, live music and a screening of the Elvis Presley classic Blue Hawaii. Channel your inner Dancing Queen: If Mamma Mia – Here We Go Again has you hankerin’ for even more ABBA, you’re in luck. The Xceptional Music Company is bringing their tribute to ABBA back to Wrigley Stage on August 18. Always one of the most popular acts in the free Catalina Island Concert Series, the Tribute to ABBA will have you dancing in the streets and singing along to all of your favorite classics. The fun starts with a beer garden at 6:30 p.m. and the music kicks off at 8 p.m.

Go to the movies: Of course, you can never go wrong with movies in the Avalon Theatre but this August offers a few more options. To coincide with their fascinating exhibit, Jaws – the Art of Fear in Filmmaking, the Catalina Island Museum will be playing the grandfather of all summer blockbusters in the outdoor amphitheater on August 15. The event begins at 7 p.m., with Jaws screening at dusk. Tickets are $5 for museum members and $17 for non-members.

Movies on the beach: If you are still traumatized from the last time you saw Jaws, perhaps Coco is more your speed. The latest Pixar film will be screened on South Beach on Aug. 22. Admission is free, thanks to the sponsorship of the Avalon Lions Club, and the movie begins at 8 p.m. Bring your lawn chair or beach blanket and plan to purchase concessions to benefit CHOICES.

Beach Bingo: Beach Bingo has always been one of our favorite things to do on Catalina on a summer evening and it sure seems like everyone else has discovered the fun. A summer tradition for years, this family-friendly game happens every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m.
