Taste of the Town – Foodie News & Tasty Tours

We love sharing local history, culture and food found on Catalina Island.  One of the best things we have the opportunity to do is support local businesses in our community (yay!).  There are food tour companies all over the country and around the world that do the same.  We hope to highlight several of these throughout 2015 so that you, your friends and family might take a food tour in your neck of the woods or plan a fun excursion when you’re traveling.

The Downtown Dish

Tour Location:  Huntsville, Alabama

Tour Length:  2 hours, 30 minutes

Days of Operation:  Every Saturday, year-round

Owners and fellow foodies, Heather and Chris started The Downtown Dish in their hometown of Huntsville, Alabama in the fall of 2014.  While they are new to the food tour business, the pair bring a vast wealth of experience when it comes to restaurant operations and catering.  Her love of food and his love of numbers combined with the pair’s local knowledge of what’s good in their hometown made the move to create The Downtown Dish an easy choice.  Here is a highlight of some of the locations you may visit while on tour:

The Office

“Nothing fussy…  Just good food” – with a tagline like that, you know it’s going to be delicious!  Just about everything on the menu elicited a response of yum from our crew.  The “new” location’s offering of sliders, small plates and soups all look amazing.  On our list to try:

The Office Burger AL

  • TheOfficeBurger – beef, Gorgonzola aioli, balsamic glaze, spring mix (served on tour)
  • TheYOLO – beef, bacon bourbon jam, prosciutto, Roma tomato and provolone
  • TheSouthern – fried chicken, spicy honey sauce, on a waffle bun with pickles
  • GrilledCheese – fontina, mozzarella, provolone, and bechamel on bread, beer battered and fried
  • SweetPotatoSoup – sweet potato, thyme sauce, honey, cream
Harrison Brothers Hardware

While the name of the location may seem a bit out of place on a food tour, it makes perfect sense when you walk in.  The building, which has been in operation since 1897, will take you back to another century.  Located in the historic court square in Huntsville, they offer a wide variety of American made products, crafts, art and food, including Pickled Pink’s line of tasty treats (watermelon spiced pickles – yes, please), Captain Rodney‘s rubs and glazes, plus a host of other items, including soups, soaps, and bread mixes.

The tour takes you to several other locations throughout Huntsville including The Kaffeeklatsch, Sam & Greg’s and Below the Radar Brewhouse.  Whether you are stopping in for Space Camp, traveling north up from Pensacola or road-tripping down from Nashville, Huntsville is worth checking out and The Downtown Dish is a great way to make you feel at home in this unique city.
