Saturday, September 20th is National Rum Punch Day, so naturally this week’s beverage from Taste of Catalina’s Delectable Drinkery is the Rum Punch. The word “Punch” is a Hindi word that translates to “five”, meaning five ingredients. There is a fairly well known rhyme that people have used for centuries to remember how to mix the perfect Rum Punch: 1 of sour, 2 of sweet, 3 of strong, 4 of weak, plus a little spice. Here is the recipe (with 5 types of ingredients) to get you thinking about this delicious cocktail:
Common Rum Punch (Barbados Recipe)
Yield: About 2 1/2 quarts
- 1 cup of lime juice
- 2 cups of simple syrup
- 3 cups Dark Rum
- 4 cups water or fruit juice
- bitters and fresh or ground nutmeg for spice
Mix lime juice, simple syrup, rum, bitters and water/juice in a pitcher.
Pour into glasses over ice.
Top with fresh grated or ground nutmeg.
In our research, we found a great product created by Dan Doan for one of his Senior Projects at the University of Washington School of Art. The Punch Permutations project is beautiful, fun for small or large groups and would make a solid graduation or bachelor gift. Hopefully Dan has plans to mass produce this – we think he’d do well. The board makes use of 6 different options for each of the ingredients listed above. It keeps the math simple and even has a well appointed resting place for your glass while you mix. Using this dice board, you could create well over 7,000 different cocktail combinations!
