This Week’s Tasty Travel Tip
Tasty Travel Tip #20 – Get Up Close To… Your Toilet: This is one of our favorite suggestions. You might hear tour guides or long time locals suggest this odd and very cool “Only in Avalon” activity:
Late at night, once the sun has gone down, go into the bathroom, pull down all the shades and turn off all the lights so it’s nice and dark. Get your head real close up to your toilet bowl after you’ve let your eyes adjust to the change in light. Lean in real close… then flush! Flush, that’s right, we said flush. See anything? Perhaps a light flash of blue/green glowing goodness? Welcome to the science of toilets in Avalon.
Late at night, once the sun has gone down, go into the bathroom, pull down all the shades and turn off all the lights so it’s nice and dark.
The sparkle or quick flash you are seeing is caused by organisms called dinoflagellates. In the 1970s, the city of Avalon switched to saltwater toilets in an effort to save precious freshwater resources (the city wide fire suppression system is saltwater, too). This means that the water in your toilet bowl in Avalon is more than likely saltwater straight from the ocean. Lots of things live in the ocean, including microscopic organisms that let off light when they are agitated.
We were hoping to share a video of this phenomena, however even the light of a cell phone makes it difficult to see this occurrence. We’ve scoured the interwebs for you and here is one of our fave videos that shows just how bright this can be. We apologize for the swearing at the end of the video, but we love that people are getting this excited about a flash of light! P.S. – please do not drop rocks into your toilet. This video was filmed on a large body of water, which doesn’t have to connect to a drainage system. Your toilet couldn’t handle it. Trust us…
