Summer is in full swing and there are plenty of things to do on Catalina Island. From bingo on the beach to dancing in the streets, the Catalina calendar is filled to overflowing.
The Catalina Island Museum keeps bringing us back with their amazing programs. First Fridays has become a don’t-miss-it activity every month and Aug. 4 is no exception. The Endless Summer is the quintessential surf film and the museum will be showing it along with live surf music by the perfectly named Neptune Cocktail. Feel free to bring a snack, beer, wine, soda and water will be available for purchase.
Another favorite Catalina Museum activity is Movies at the Museum. Regular screenings of movies with a Catalina connection showcase the museum’s outdoor amphitheater and give attendees the opportunity to see the Chihuly glass exhibit in a whole new light – after dark. Coming up August 9 A League of Their Own celebrates the all-women baseball league that entertained sports fans during World War II. William Wrigley Jr, although not depicted in the movie, played an integral role in the league.
We’ve been enjoying the recent remodel at Steve’s, which has also renamed itself Steve’s Steakhouse and Seafood to better represent the diversity of its menu. They are still serving up favorites like Shrimp Avalon, filet mignon and those irresistible coconut shrimp we showcase on the Catalina Tasting and Cultural Walking Tour.
The Catalina Concert Series continues Aug. 26 with a tribute to ABBA, always one of the highlights of the series as far as dancing in the streets. As usual, a beer garden will be set up near Wrigley Stage an hour before showtime. Get their early for a chance to win Catalina Food Tour tickets and gift certificates to Catalina Coffee and Cookie Co., along with several other great prizes.
Speaking of prizes, summer just wouldn’t be summer without a few evenings of Beach Bingo on South Beach. Cards are just $1 and you can play every Tuesday and Thursday at 6 p.m.
