“And make sure to try one of our World-Famous Bloody Marys…”
The Catalina Express transports nearly a million guests annually to Avalon and each trip begins with a spiel that includes this familiar sentence, “Make sure to try one of our World-Famous Bloody Marys”. For visitors traveling to Catalina Island, these words signal the start of something exciting – vacation has begun! For residents returning home, this phrase usually brings a sigh of relief after a busy day overtown (aka the mainland). We’ve shared numerous suggestions and tips about where to eat & drink once you’re in town, but one of our most frequently shared hints implores you to make sure to try this beverage before you even step foot onshore. You must be asking – are they that good? And the answer is, yes, they are.
They are simple yet flavorful, easy to make, and just plain good.
Now we could go on & on with stories about how the members of our foodie crew have experienced these tasty tomato-based beverages – on the way to concerts or ballgames with friends, after attending weddings or family gatherings on the mainland, or even deconstructed and spilled when a particularly rough boat ride on a high school sports road trip 25+ years ago caused bottles of vodka and tabasco to break in the galley (don’t worry – that would never happen now as boats won’t travel when it’s that rough). But instead, we’re just going to share the recipe:
Catalina Express Bloody Mary Recipe
- 1 1/4 oz. Absolut Vodka
- 8 oz. Mrs. T’s Bloody Mary Mix
- 1 splash Worcestershire Sauce
- 1 dash Celery Salt
- 1 dash Tabasco Sauce*
- 1 squeeze fresh lime
- 1 Spicy Green Bean**
Mix the first 5 ingredients over ice
Finish with a squeeze of lime & a spicy green bean
*Add Tabasco as you please – more dashes for more spice
**Add as many Spicy Green Beans as you’d like
The best part of sharing this recipe comes with a fun update: You can now have these delicious beverages – green beans included – while relaxing in Avalon! Catalina Coffee & Cookie Co., who we feature on our Avalon Tasting & Cultural Walking Tour, is now selling jars of spicy green beans in their shop at the Metropole Market Place. These pickled spiced beans make a great gift to take home for family & friends but we’re warning you – they often don’t make it all the way due to their tempting deliciousness. Make sure to get an extra jar just for you.
