Most people who’ve spent much time on the island will admit that the best season on Catalina is fall. The weather’s still warm, the crowds start to abate, and the pace of life slows down — just a bit. It helps that there is an abundance of things to do in the fall. Here are just a few of the many events on Catalina that have the island buzzing.
Festival of Art: If there was an official top ten list of Catalina events, the Catalina Festival of Art would certainly be near the top. Held each September for more than six decades, this juried show is one of the most popular art festivals in the state. Featuring fine art, sculpture, photography and crafts, the festival will take over Crescent Avenue from Sept. 20-22.
Wine Festival: What could be better than tasting great wine and sampling delicious appetizers while your toes are in the sand? How about doing it all while raising money for a great cause? The Catalina Island Women’s Forum, which offers mentoring and scholarships for local girls, hosts an annual wine festival that has become a don’t-miss Catalina event. This year’s festival is scheduled for Sept. 21 on South Beach.
Wrigley Jubilee: If you’ve experienced our Avalon Tasting & Cultural Walking Tour, you’ll know that no person has had more of an impact on Avalon than William Wrigley, Jr. His legacy will be celebrated at the Catalina Island Museum on Sept. 21. The Wrigley Jubilee will honor the 100 years of Wrigley influence on the island.
Film Festival Each year, the Catalina Film Festival has added new and interesting opportunities to network with industry insiders and celebrate the art of film. This year includes events both in Avalon and Long Beach, with the Catalina events on Sept. 27-28, including movie premiers, a black-tie gala and more.
Groove Island: The inaugural Groove Island music festival will take over the island from Sept. 27 to 30. Promoted as a “first of its kind immersive dance music experience,” Groove Island will certainly take things to a new level in Avalon. It should be entertaining.
Beach Bingo: At the other end of the spectrum is the family friendly and decidedly low-key fun of Beach Bingo, which continues every Saturday on South Beach until Sept. 28. Stop by between 5 and 6 p.m. for the chance to win some great prizes and get your toes in the sand.
