Catalina Food Tour inspiration returns

As far as Catalina Food Tours is concerned, it’s the most wonderful time of the year.

The Taste Around of Avalon, which inspired the Avalon Tasting & Cultural Walking Tour, is just a few weeks away. This annual #CatalinaFoodie fest is something we look forward to all year long and it’s no surprise why. More than a dozen Avalon dining and drinking spots take part in the fun, providing tastes of culinary creations and cocktail concoctions – and dessert.

Some of our favorite stops on the tour are regular winners. It’s no surprise that in 2017, Steve’s Steakhouse & Seafood won for their coconut shrimp and teriyaki mushroom steak. Avalon’s Grille’s bison taco took second and Bluewater Avalon garnered a third place with their lobster BLT sliders. In the cocktail category, the tropical lei at Maggie’s Blue Rose was the crowd favorite. Other Catalina Food Tour stops winning awards include Coyote Joe’s Bernadette smoothie in third place for non-alcoholic taste; Lloyd’s of Avalon’s first place dessert award for their peanut butter and raspberry brownie bites and a third place dessert award for Bluewater’s marble cheesecake.

This year the Taste Around of Avalon is scheduled for May 31 and the competition looks to be just as fierce as ever. If you want to get in on the action, voting cards are available between May 25 and May 30 from our friends at the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau – who get special thanks for organizing the shindig every year. Those cards will set you back $2 if you buy them in advance or $3 if you buy them the day of the event. The competitors will start serving at 5 p.m. and you’ll have until 9 p.m. to wander around town and taste. The cost to taste varies depending on the establishment, but typically the charge is between $1 and $5. Once everyone votes, the winners will be tallied and bragging rights – and the $100 first place prizes — bestowed.
