Big changes for many restaurants on Catalina Island

on May 17, 2019

This year has been a busy one for restaurants on Catalina Island. Read on to learn more about everything going on with Avalon dining.

Toyon Grill: Now open on the top floor of the Conservancy’s new Trailhead, Toyon Grill offers breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. The outdoor venue has sweeping views of Avalon Harbor and menu favorites include Asian chicken salad, pulled bbq bison & pork sandwich and fried chicken.

El Galleon: For several decades this ocean view Catalina restaurant has offered a diverse menu and a full bar, but it’s perhaps best known for its evening karaoke, which frequently fills the bar and spills out onto Crescent Avenue. In May, the venerable restaurant was purchased by the team behind Bluewater Avalon. It’s currently undergoing an in-depth cleaning and word on the street is they plan to keep a similar menu along with karaoke for the summer before closing for an extensive renovation in the fall.

Avalon Theatre: Starting this month you’ll need to get to the movies a little earlier. Avalon Theatre’s nightly showing of first-run films will be moving to a 6:30 showtime in order to accommodate sales of flatbread pizza as well as beer and wine.

NDMK: Pronounced “endemic,” this new Avalon restaurant will feature sushi and poke as well as a few cooked fish options. Wine and beer will be served, including options from Overtown Brewery, a new mainland brewery with island connections. Look for NDMK to open this summer on Claressa Avenue, in the building previously occupied by CC Beau.

Catalina Coffee & Cookie Co: Our favorite spot for breakfast all day is going to make things even more convenient. They’ll be offering on-line ordering of coffee, breakfast sandwiches and teas as well as their delicious sweets and treats.

PKW: Avalon’s Hotel Atwater has been closed for nearly two years, undergoing a multi-million-dollar renovation. Part of that renovation includes a new lobby, bar and restaurant. Named for Philip Knight Wrigley, PKW will feature tapas, shared plates and craft cocktails. Scheduled opening is spring of 2020.
