February Catalina Buzz

on February 15, 2019

February may be the month for romance, but what we’re loving this month is what all the rain has done to the interior of the island. The February Catalina Buzz is all about getting out of Avalon and into the hills to enjoy green hillsides, cascading waterfalls and overflowing reservoirs.

Want to check it out? There are several ways to see it, including hiking and tours.

In addition to getting out of town, we’re also looking forward to Wrigley’s Catalina, the new exhibit opening this month at the Catalina Island Museum. Spotlighting the indelible impact the visionary businessman had on the island, Wrigley’s Catalina will feature photos, documents and artifacts from the Wrigley family. The new exhibit also commemorates the centennial anniversary of William Wrigley, Jr.’s purchase of Santa Catalina Island in 1919. As always, museum members get free admission – if you haven’t joined yet, what are you waiting for?

On the island, just like everywhere else, events come and go, their success – or lack thereof – a combination of demand, dedication and serendipity. In Avalon, a handful have stood the test of time, becoming icons on the annual Catalina calendar of events. One of those events will take place Feb. 23, bringing hundreds of divers from the mainland to plunge beneath the surface of Avalon Harbor in search of trash, debris and junk.

In addition to the cans and bottles, cellphones and sunglasses, those divers regularly find some interesting relics, making the Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup awards ceremony a source of humor and entertainment. It’s all in a good cause, with proceeds benefitting both the USC’s
Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber and Wrigley Institute Scientific Diving Program.

The Casino Ballroom on Catalina

The Casino Ballroom will be the venue for An Evening With Oscar.

One of the newer events on Catalina will be held the same weekend. Although it’s only been around for a few years, An Evening with Oscar has become an integral part of the Catalina Island Medical Center Foundation’s fund-raising program as well as a must-do event for hundreds of attendees. Featuring a live and silent auction as well as Oscar balloting and the Academy Awards telecast, this black-tie event will be held in the elegant Casino Ballroom on Feb. 24.
