This May, the island is buzzing about a number of upcoming Catalina events. Here’s five things that we’re looking forward to this month.
Silent Film Benefit: The Catalina Island Museum’s annual Silent Film Benefit has been a must-do Avalon event for decades and this year is no different. Scheduled for May 18, this year’s benefit will feature the flapper comedy “Why Be Good.” Doors open at 12:30 and period dress is encouraged.
Avalon Ball: After “Why Be Good” gets you into the period mood, why not stick around that evening for the Avalon Ball, in the art deco masterpiece of the Casino Ballroom. Dean Moore and the Avalon Ball Orchestra will offer up a wide selection of ‘20s and ‘30s hits for your dancing pleasure.
Fly-in: Thanks to an innovative partnership with the United States Marines and a generous contribution from Ace Clearwater Enterprises, Catalina’s Airport in the Sky has undergone a historic renovation. The Catalina Conservancy, which owns the airport, will be celebrating with a Runway Reopening Fly-In on May 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. With planes, vendors, live music and a special retro menu at the DC-3 Café, this is one event you won’t want to miss. The event is free, but you must register to attend.
Chili Cook-off: Avalon’s Rotary Club will be hitting the beach on May 25 for their annual Chili Cook-off. The fund raiser kicks off with plenty of chili tasting at 1 p.m. on South Beach. Tickets are $20 per adult and $5 for kids over 5 and all funds raised support Rotary’s various programs.
Taste Around: We’ve already got a big red circle around May 30, our favorite Catalina event of the year. The Taste Around of Avalon is the perfect way to celebrate Catalina’s culinary culture. We love it so much we created the Catalina Food Tour.
