Most of the time, Catalina Island weather is perfect. Thanks to the Pacific, summer’s highs are cooled and winter’s lows are warmed. Occasionally, however, summer brings a wave of warmth that leaves us longing for ocean breezes and air conditioning. If summer’s leaving you a bit too hot for comfort, here are our favorite spots to eat when you need to beat the heat.
Overlooking the water: It doesn’t matter how hot it is, a view of the water just makes it seem cooler. A slight breeze over the ocean is all it takes to bring temperatures down a bit. Luckily, several island restaurants offer an ocean view when the Catalina weather gets a little too toasty. At the Bluewater Avalon, get a table on the water to take advantage Avalon Harbor’s cooling influence.
On the beach: We love having lunch – and cocktails – at Descanso Beach as much as the next person. But we’re also partial to getting our food to go and heading out for our favorite spot on South Beach (exactly where is a secret). You can get yummy grab-and-go food at many places in town and thanks to a new city ordinance all the packaging will soon be environmentally friendly – at most places it already is. We’re partial to breakfast sandwiches at Catalina Coffee & Cookie Co., but also love Café Metropole and Avalon Seafood.
Air-conditioning: This one’s obvious, but there’s nothing like a little air conditioning to bring down the temperature. Both Maggie’s Blue Rose and Steve’s Steakhouse & Seafood offer air conditioning – not to mention delish food and drinks.
On the move: When the Catalina weather gets you all hot, cool down on the Catalina Happy Hour Tour.
