Avalon’s favorite tiki bar is all grown up – but that doesn’t mean we’re expecting them to start acting their age. Founded 30 years ago, Luau Larry’s on Catalina Island shows no signs of slowing down.
This thatched tradition has become an island institution. Frequently hosting live music, Luau’s is a must-stop on any Avalon bar crawl as well as the perfect spot for an afternoon lunch, hangover-curing plate of nachos or an early evening cocktail where the bar meets the bay. Perhaps most famous for the Wiki Wacker, Luau’s has distributed thousands of straw hats, worn as a badge of honor after consuming the deceptively delicious cocktail. Don’t want a hat? How about an “I got my wiki wacked at Luau’s Larry’s” bumper sticker?
Luau’s casual menu is the perfect complement to their creative concoctions. We love the wings – bull, with barbecue sauce; turtle, with teriyaki sauce and old school Buffalo. They’ve also got great burgers – the Hawaiian, with grilled pineapple and teriyaki, is a favorite. Wednesdays’ Cheeseburger in Paradise is an island tradition and one of the best deals in town.
Turning 30 doesn’t happen every year and owner – and founder — Ken Putnam is stretching out the fun all season long. They’re planning plenty of shenanigans, including t-shirt and hat giveaways all summer long. It all kicks off on May 12, when they’ll take their show on the road down to Wrigley Stage with 30th Anniversary Kick Off Celebration. For details on all the upcoming activities, follow Luau’s on Facebook.
Open daily from 10 a.m. until the wee hours, Luau’s friendly staff would love to have you stop by and have a celebratory cocktail. Or you can visit Luau Larry’s on the Catalina Happy Hour Tour, our party on the move.
