Lloyd’s of Avalon is a Catalina Island tradition — and the newest stop on the Avalon Tasting & Cultural Walking Tour.
For more than 75 years, the irresistible aromas wafting from the corner of Sumner and Crescent avenues have summoned sweet tooths young and old. Intrigued by the scent of chocolate, once they arrived they are rewarded by the sight of caramel apples, salt water taffy and hundreds of classic confections.
One of the oldest continuously operated businesses on the island, Lloyd’s of Avalon offers homemade chocolates, ice cream and classic candies you can buy by the pound. What this Avalon icon is more famous for, however, is salt water taffy. Prominently displayed in the front window, the taffy-pullling machine at Lloyd’s has hypnotized generations of Catalina visitors. Nearly 20 flavors are produced and trying them all to find your favorite is a popular pastime. We’re partial to the cinnamon. And the vanilla. And the banana. Then again, the peanut butter is pretty good. And you have to try the coconut. And you definitely should try the butterscotch.
Salt water taffy isn’t Lloyd’s only claim to fame and it’s not the only thing you’ll be tasting when you visit this delicious destination with Catalina Food Tours. Caramel apples have graduated from Halloween tradition to gourmet indulgence and Lloyd’s offers some you’ll be craving long after you’ve tried them the first time. Dipped in much more than caramel, these apples are a culinary confection you don’t want to miss.
Lloyd’s joins the five other Avalon eateries you’ll discover on the Avalon Tasting & Cultural Walking Tour. What are you waiting for? Click here to book your tour and get to eating.
