Movie news has the island buzzing, and there are plenty of things to do on Catalina in November.
Catalina Island is buzzing this November with the news that the Avalon Theatre, located in the iconic Catalina Casino, will no longer show first-run movies nightly after the end of the year. An Avalon tradition for nine decades, the theatre’s spectacular art deco murals and sparkling star-strewn ceiling are a part of the allure of island movie going. Upcoming movies include Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Frozen 2 and Ford v. Ferrari.
Giving thanks. Thanksgiving has always been one of our favorite holidays. There’s no budget-busting shopping, weeks-long preparation or unrealistic expectations. And there’s food. Oh yes, lots and lots of food.
If you’re lucky enough to spend Thanksgiving on Catalina Island, you’ll have plenty of options for food – just about all of which won’t require you preparing it or, most importantly, doing dishes after you consume it. In Avalon, you’ll find a traditional Thanksgiving meal at several restaurants, including Maggie’s Blue Rose and Steve’s Steakhouse as well as El Galleon and the Avalon Grille. You’ll also discover great eats – minus the turkey – at the Lobster Trap, Three Palms Avalon Arcade, DC-3 Grill and Descanso Beach Club as well as at our friends, the Catalina Coffee and Cookie Co.
Spending Thanksgiving in Two Harbors? Lucky you. The Harbor Reef restaurant will be serving up a traditional Thanksgiving feast. Reservations highly recommended.
Kicking off the holidays. We’ve waited until after we mentioned Thanksgiving to bring it up, but Christmas – however you choose to celebrate it — is right around the corner. Avalon kicks off the holiday season at the Catalina Island Museum with their holiday edition of First Fridays. Complete with ornament decorating, carolers, an ice sculpture and a visit from St. Nick and his missus, First Fridays Holiday Edition will be held on Dec. 6 and cost $12 for members and $17 for non-members.
Shop ‘til you drop. The following day, Dec. 7, is another our favorite island holiday traditions, Shop Catalina. Discounts, raffles, costumed carolers and more will ring in the holiday spirit throughout Avalon. This year’s event spreads the holiday cheer into even more hours, with participating retailers showcasing their Christmas spirit from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Whether you’ll be giving gifts for Hanukah, Solstice, Christmas, Kwanzaa or Festivus, Shop Catalina is a great way to find something wonderful while supporting the local Avalon economy.
