Catalina Buzz — May Gray and June Gloom might be just around the corner, but things are heating up on the calendar of events here on Catalina Island.
Burger week – The burgers are getting particularly creative at the Avalon Grille, where they are taking the challenge of National Burger Month seriously. They’ll be serving up a different burger each week for the next five weeks, with options as deliciously intriguing as a gruyere-stuffed bison burger and a harissa-marinated lamb burger. The fun extends until June 3.
Cinco de Mayo — The 5th of May might be an Americanized version of a Mexican holiday, but that’s not going to stop us from having a serious amount of fun. Starting at 4 p.m. on May 5, Wrigley Stage will be hosting margaritas, yummy food, a beer garden and Ballet Folklorico performances. After that, head over to Mi Casita for dinner and drink specials.
Mothers Day – Catalina Island is the ideal place to celebrate your favorite parent (don’t tell dad). Personally, as a mom, we’d love to go on an Avalon Tasting & Cultural Walking Tour, but your mom might prefer brunch at the Seaport Bistro or the Avalon Grille. Dinner at Bluewater Avalon, Steve’s Steakhouse or the Lobster Trap also sound delicious.
Feeling Chili – for the last several years, the Avalon Rotary has been having some major fun on South Beach with their Chili Cook-off and Salsa Competition. With more than $3,000 in prize money, this cook-off has been bringing in some serious chili cooks as well as an audience eager to taste their creations. It all starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 26. Tickets are $20 for adults and the afternoon also includes live music, raffles, beer & wine, plus fun and games. Get your tickets through the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce.
Metropole – We’ve been enjoying the themed dinner events from our friends at the Metropole Café. This summer we’re looking forward to more of those dinner events on Fridays and Saturdays as well as the fact that they’ll be open for dinner nightly all summer long.
