Summer may not officially arrive until June 20, but it sure is starting to feel like it on the island. Here are five things to do on Catalina Island we’re looking forward to this month.
Catalinaland: The unofficial King of Americana brings his unique take on retro-style to the Avalon Theatre, thanks to the Catalina Island Museum. Complete with a slide show showcasing Catalina history as well as the entertainer’s favorite current island experiences, you won’t want to miss this one. It all starts at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 10, and will be followed with a book signing and cake – yes, cake.
B-I-N-G-O: There are somethings that just scream summer in Avalon. The sound of the Chimes tolling every 15 minutes. The feeling of the pier under bare feet. And Beach Bingo every Tuesday and Thursday evening on South Beach. Beach Bingo returns June 19.
The movies: We love going to the movies at the museum, especially when the movie is the kitschy, campy fun of Catalina Caper, the 1967 film that starred Catalina Island in a comedy musical. The fun starts at 7 p.m. and the movie kicks off at dusk.
The Rolling Stones: Well, not really, but we can pretend. Mick Adams and the Stones will take to Wrigley Stage for the return of the Catalina Summer Concert Series on June 23. As usual, the beer garden opens at 6:30 and the music kicks off at 8 p.m. We’ll see you there.
Getting ready for the big day – well, days: There’s no place better to be on the Fourth of July than Catalina Island. Our home town does Independence Day the way it should be – with small-town fun, a bit of whimsy and fireworks reflected in the harbor. This year’s celebrations promise all the Independence Day fun you’ve come to expect along with a few new activities to look forward to.
